Learn about the Welsh Wool Industry
Dolgoch Mill is steeped in history with the site dating back to 1884, on land that was once part of the Earl of Cawdor’s estate.
The wool mill was built in two phases: a two storey block originally powered by a waterwheel which is still present, although in need of some repair, and then ten years later another two storey block at right angles. The cottages were built within the oldest block in the 1970’s and the newer block forms our accommodation. In its heyday there were 15 weavers involved in the production of cloth at the mill, which closed following the mill owner’s death in 1969.
A short walk away lies the National Wool Museum in Drefach Felindre. This fascinating museum delves into the rich history of the Welsh wool industry, once the nation’s most prominent sector with hundreds of active mills. Today, only a handful remain operational. Dolgoch Mill Cottages boast an ideal location, offering easy access to the working mill at the museum and other mills within a short drive. Your visit to the National Wool Museum will not only provide historical context, but also give you a glimpse into Dolgoch Mill’s past life as a working mill.
