The quaint village of St Dogmaels is a 35 minute drive from Dolgoch Mill Cottages. Located between the bustling town of Cardigan (in Welsh Aberteifi) with it’s antique shops and restaurants and the sandy blue flag beach of Poppit Sands it is an ideal place to explore if you are in the areas of Cardigan or Poppit Sands.

Tucked away off the main road is the remains of the 12th century Tironian St Dogmaels Abbey, that, in its day, was one of the richer monastic institutions in Wales. We visited the site for the first time on a Tuesday in August… a wet Tuesday in August!… but it was still bustling with people exploring the abbey and picking up local produce in the adjacent market.

The small St Dogmaels Local Producers Market, that featured on Gardener’s World, is only held on a Tuesday between 9am – 1pm but is well worth the visit. You’ll be able to buy some local produce including vegetables, meats, cheese, vegetarian options, gluten free produce, fresh fish, cakes, breads, natural paints and crafts. The market is sign-posted in St Dogmaels but try and park a short walk away in the village car park or if this is full one of the many side streets in the area.

Within St Dogmaels there is a cafe and a number of inns where you can get a bite to eat, one close to the Blessing Stone on the banks of the River Tiefi.
