The National Botanic Garden of Wales is just a 40 minute drive away from Dolgoch Mill Cottages.
The gardens are set in the beautiful Carmarthenshire countryside and offer enough interest to keep the whole family occupied for the day.
There are a range of themed gardens, the world’s largest single-span glasshouse, a tropical Butterfly House, cafés, a shop, a gallery, a children’s play area and more. For those who enjoy walking there is an hour circular national nature reserve walk to the north east where you can follow the clearly marked path through the Pont Felin Gât wooded valley looking out for the hidden waterfall. You can see Paxton’s tower in the distance that’s well worth the drive to on the way home if you have time.
Whether you are just happy to wander around and view the majestic 560 acres of Regency landscape, or are more interested in the compact vegetable plot, double walled garden, ice house, apothecary’s hall, bee garden or the Wallace Garden next to the Principality House, there should be something for all ages.
There are also really interesting ongoing educational and ecological projects such as “Saving plants and fungi” and “Saving pollinators” together with Scientific collections such as the living plant collections, a herbarium, a library and online database of DNA barcodes – you may have seen this covered in television programmes including BBC’s Gardeners World.
